Breakup sex is everywhere in the media right now, and the idea of rekindling romance physically after a breakup is painted as a must-try experience. But does it really help? Recent studies suggest otherwise.
Two big studies dove deep into this post breakup behavior. The first study, with 212 participants, found that men generally felt better about themselves after breakup sex, while women felt better about the relationship. The second study, involving 585 participants, revealed three main motives: relationship maintenance, hedonism, and ambivalence. Men leaned more towards hedonistic and ambivalent reasons compared to women.
Surprisingly, nearly 27% of 17- to 24-year-olds admitted to having sex with an ex within two years of breaking up. Meanwhile, 22% of separated married couples reported engaging in sexual contact within four months of separation. Yet, the emotional rollercoaster that follows—ranging from potential heartbreak to rekindled romance—shows there’s no one-size-fits-all outcome.
This phenomenon needs more research for sure. So, before jumping back into bed with an ex, it’s crucial to weigh the potential emotional consequences.
